Unlocking Power Wheelchair Joysticks – VSI controller
Unlocking power wheelchair joysticks is essential to a power wheelchair owner. This can save you time and money by avoiding a service call. Many of you who use power wheelchairs do not fully know the hidden tricks behind your joystick. All joysticks have an inhibit or lock mode which prevents use of the joystick and restricting all functions of the power wheelchair. There are typically three different combinations to locking and unlocking power wheelchair joysticks. We are going to explain in detail how to lock and unlock your device. The inhibit mode is used by technicians to perform diagnostics on the controller through the joystick. Programming allows us technicians to perform diagnostics and programming to movement of the joystick. Instructions
Locking:
-With the joystick powered on, press and hold the power button for two seconds or until a chirp is made.
-Press forward on the joystick and hold it until a chirp is made.
-Press reverse on the joystick and hold it until a chirp is made.
-Allow the joystick to center by removing your hand from the gimble.
-A loud beep will now be made, and the lights will flash in a sequence from right to left, or left to right, depending on the model.
Unlocking:
-With the joystick powered on, press forward on the joystick and hold it until a chirp is made.
-Press reverse on the joystick and hold it until a chirp is made.
-Allow the joystick to center by removing your hand from the gimble.
-A loud beep will now be made, and the flashing lights will now become steady unlocking the device.

Another popular controller is the SPJ+ joystick, which is commonly found on Invacare power wheelchairs. To lock and unlock, simply press the horn button twice within two seconds.
